Asian Art
Online Sources for Asian Art
If you find an image you want to use, but it isn't available in a higher resolution, contact me and I'll try to find a good digital image for you. It depends on the source.
- The Huntington Archive (Ohio State)
- Huge photographic archive, originally focused on South Asia, but now includes objects from throughout Asia: http://huntington.wmc.ohio-state.edu/public
- I can get good digital images of most everything in the Huntington Archive, but the site itself provides very good resolution when you zoom in.
- Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum, Nara National Museum, and Kyushu National Museum
- eMuseum: http://www.emuseum.jp
- This is an incredible site with fantastic, high-resolution images of many of the best objects in Japan. They are mainly Japanese in origin, but there are also important Chinese and Korean objects that are preserved in Japan. They have iOS and Android apps available: [iOS] [Android]
- National Palace Museum (Taipei)
- Known primarily for its collection of early Chinese painting. Excellent, high-resolution images of a selection of the finest paintings are available here: [Selections: Paintings]
- Special exhibitions with good images:
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
- The Met has a small collection of highlights available online: http://www.metmuseum.org/collections/browse-highlights
- You can search by place: [China] [Japan] [India]
- If you choose an object from the Met's highlights, contact me because I can probably get a better image of it for you.
- The British Museum (London)
- The British Museum has a good policy for obtaining halfway decent images of their objects. You have to register with them to request an image, and they send it by email to you within two days. You can browse the highlights of their collection here: http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights.aspx
- You can search by place: [China] [Japan] [India]. Use the pop-up menus to narrow and redirect the search.
- The Smithsonian (Washington)
- You can search by place: [China] [Japan] [India]
- These are very fine collections, but the images online are not always detailed enough to use. If you want to use something from here, ask me about it.
- The Cleveland Museum of Art: [China] [Japan] [India]
- Again, a superb collection, but the images online are not always detailed enough to use. If you want to use something from here, ask me about it.
